O2Micro launches efficient and extremely fast charging solution

The charging IC is constantly being updated with the evolution of NB. In addition to the basic charging function, it is a must-have feature to provide battery energy mashup adapters to supply power to the system at the right time. The architecture generally has three architectures: NVDC (Narrow VDC), HPB (Hybrid Power Boost), and Buck-Boost Charger. Among them, HPB (Hybrid Power Boost) is the most popular. Even with the promotion of the USB PD by the Buck-Boost Charger, the number of (HPB) is still different. The main reason is low cost and VIN (VSYS) is a relatively high voltage supply. In the low-end and e-sports models are still popular. At HPB (Hybrid Power Boost)'s Charger IC, O2Micro continues to introduce new features to meet the design needs of its customers.

The OZ26786 is a new product introduced by the 2019Q1. It is a pin to pin with the OZ26782 produced in the previous generation. More flexible in design. The main difference is that the OZ26786 adds three sets of registers (registers) to make the adapter's current protection more flexible and accurate.

(Figure 1)

Nowadays, the NB power supply design, in order to achieve the ultimate computing efficiency and low cost, engineers can be said to try to find energy from every possible place. In the process, the adapter protection mechanism is often challenged. The OZ26786 provides two sets of Programmable Adapter OCP levels for use with the PROCHOT# signal. And its current setting is linearly adjusted by a 6-bit DAC, giving users more choices.

(Figure II)

The overcurrent protection design of the adapter is usually such that as the proportion of overcurrent increases, the delay protection time becomes shorter. In the face of the ever-changing system "loading" design, engineers can only avoid the "sudden short-term system high current" trigger to the adapter protection point and power off by lowering the Adapter OCP level for PROCHOT# level. .

In fact, under such adjustments, although the protection of the trigger adapter is avoided, the performance of the system is also sacrificed. To this end, O2Micro's OZ26786 provides a two-level level setting. There is a short delay protection time at the high current setting level and a lower current level. In this way, the system can reduce the current limit of the adapter warning (PROCHOT#) because of the short high current. In turn, improve system performance.

Practical application case: The biggest load on the system is the CPU and GPU chipset. Their load performance, in addition to the continuous average, also includes the peak current. Bump Technology simulates continuous system load through an external electronic load (1.5A load), plus the implementation of the 3DMark program.

In the original charging IC design, only one adapter current level warning (PROCHOT#) function. Its PROCHOT# is frequently triggered (Figure 3). The 3DMark score that ran out was P14161 (Figure 4).

(Figure 3)

(Figure 4)

After the charging IC was changed to OZ26786, PROCHOT# was rarely triggered (Figure 5). It eventually ran out of the P17045 (Figure 6) high score. The score difference is nearly 3,000 points. This is a striking example of taking advantage of precise protection mechanisms to improve system performance.
